Chapter 19

"Please . . . why?" Luke repeated shakily, sitting back on his heels and looking at the tracks of tears down Alex's face.

Alex could sense Luke was fighting the need to just lay down with him and lose it again, and he watched as he pulled over his shirt and dropped it in his lap, studying him as Alex simply pulled the material close to his chest.

"Why the name? Why the connection?" Alex summarised, his voice rough from crying, wiping at tired eyes with a large hand and pushing himself to sit leaning back against the wall. "I wish I knew . . . I mean . . . I don't understand the words on my own skin, l never even tried, how could I have known that I carried your name as a scar?"

Luke sighed, rubbing come covered fingers on his jeans. "Until the Morgan collection I would never have had any idea of the significance of the marks on your skin. It's just, when I saw my name, I felt . . . like you had played me, conned me."

Greek was one of the basic languages from which English had sprung and the old and modern Greek alphabet was very similar. Even though the words on Alex were stylized, Luke wasn't new to this, he could decipher them.

"I didn't have any idea that the symbols on your skin actually meant anything until I saw references in the Morgan collection."

Alex nodded. He understood where Luke was coming from, since he himself had an inherently suspicious nature. "So your name is there. What now?"

"Seems like the fates have decided," Luke murmured, more to himself than to Alex, a contemplative tone in his voice.

"Decided what?" Alex asked, a shiver running down his spine.

"Decided we need to do this together, that somehow I should be a part of your future."

"Okay . . . okay," Alex said softly, trying to think through what to do by bouncing his ideas off of Luke. "We've stayed here too long already. We need to get away from here. Thanos has other properties all over the world. We could hide, figure this out?" To Luke, he knew he probably sounded both hopeful and apprehensive at the same time. He searched for something else, any desire in Luke to run with the knowledge he now had. There was nothing there in Luke. They were in this together until the riddle was solved. Alex stood to stretch, and walked to the window.

"Wait. Alex, the other stuff . . . when I touched you . . . what was that?" Alex wondered if Luke knew he was telegraphing uncertainty and reluctance to deal with the answers Alex might give him,

It was obvious to Alex that Luke didn't even want to ask and felt nervous of Alex's reply. Alex swallowed. He had never told anyone this, not even Edward; Edward who touched the scars every night and held him through his nightmares. Grief at thinking of Edward made him curl
